Our Mission

The mission of the John Corcoran Foundation, Inc. is to facilitate the prevention and eradication of illiteracy in adults and children across America, through public awarness, creation and dissemination of resources, training and mentoring through existing literacy organizations and educational programs.

The John Corcoran Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit corporation which has been established since 1997 for the express purpose of facilitating "the prevention and eradication of illiteracy in adults and children across America, through public awareness, creation and dissemination of resources, and training and mentoring through existing literacy organizations and educational programs.

Our Vision
Our vision is to help create a society in which each individual has the basic skills necessary to become a success in all aspects of life including education, work and community service.

Our Values and Beliefs
• America is a global, proactive model fbr universal literacy.
• Improving and developing literacy skills and values is a lifelong process.
• In America today, it is as important to teach an adult to read as it to teach a child to read.
• It is never too late to learn to read, write and spell, or to improve skills.
• The key to teaching everyone to read, write and spell is proper instruction.
• The key to proper instruction is properly trained teachers.
• Phonemic awareness and systematic, explicit phonics instruction are critical components of teaching reading.
• The only cure tor illiteracy is literacy.
• Literacy skills are predictors of our economic, social and personal well-being.
• Imparting basic skills empowers the individual more effectively than accommodation.
• The integrity of the individual learner must be valued.
• Literacy is our essential duty and investment in America's fixture. Teaching children and adults to read, write and spell is prudent and economically expedient; it's also an act of LOVE.

Five Year Goals
• Empower schools, libraries, community groups and other organizations to successfully achieve literacy for children and adults.
• Create a national clearinghouse and referral service for resources, training and other information pertaining to child and adult literacy.
• Maintain a reference collection of print, audio-visual resources and multimedia related to adult and child literacy for the home and school.
• Develop and/or refine training techniques and resources for literacy providers of adults and children.
• Conduct in-service training for teachers and providers in what is described as reliable, replicatable research-based methodology in reading instruction.
• Sponsor and/or create multimedia programs that identify and explain the problems associated with adults and childrens reading difficulties and provide solutions.
• Create advisory boards to include all who have a stake in those who have language processing difficulties.

Some of Our Programs:
The John Corcoran Foundation has been providing tutoring programs in public schools. Certified as a Supplemental Services Provider, the Foundation is qualified to accept federal funding to set up remedial reading programs in schools. Their programs use multisensory methodologies ideal for teaching students who need intensive tutorial instruction. The Foundation guarantees to provide research-based instruction that leads to measurable gains for students.

Skilled, trained tutors provide support for struggling students, in small-group settings that help students develop confidence as they see their reading improve. . Innovative software is used to provide support through the use of the highest quality interactive programs.

How To Make A Difference
Individual Donations:
Individuals may contribute to the Foundation in any amount.

Civic Organizations / Clubs:
Clubs and civic organizations may make donations to the fund. A club or group may even adopt the Foundation as a service project.

Honorary and Memorial Contributions:
Individuals or clubs may make donations in memory or in honor of an individual or occasion. Acknowledgment of the contribution can be sent to the honorees, but the amount of the gift will remain undisclosed. For record-keeping and tax purposes, the donor will be sent a receipt for the donation.

Gifts of Life Insurance and Annuities:
The Foundation can be made beneficiary of life insurance policy or annuities. Premiums paid of policies assigned to the Foundation as owner and beneficiary are deductible for Federal Income Tax returns (and, in some cases, are deductible on State Income Tax returns). Please, consult with your tax advisor regarding deductions on your tax returns.

Bequests:
A testamentary clause which can be added to a will is available from the John Corcoran Foundation. Bequests for the Foundation are exempt from Federal Estate Tax in the United States of America.

The John Corcoran Foundation encourages you to keep the vision and mission of eradication and prevention of illiteracy for adults and children in America.
